A law school student (Matt Damon) loses his tuition money and everything else he has saved in a high stakes poker game. Learning his lesson (he thinks), he vows to his girl friend (Mol Gretchen) to give up playing forever. That lasts until his best friend (Edward Norton), a notorious card shark, is released from prison and drags him back into the circuit to pay debts he has incurred to a Russian mobster (John Malkovich). John Turturro also appears as a career poker player and Martin Landau plays a law professor who understands his student's need to be something other than what is dictated to him.

I like this movie, but it's kind of retarded when you think about it. Mike didn't learn a damn thing. He did the same dumbass thing in the end of the movie that he did in the beginning risking his entire bankroll like that. Even if he was a better player does not mean that he is guaranteed to win. He could make a technically correct play and still lose his entire stack.

@maheradi It was the same "misjudgement " Matt had made towards KGB's hand in the 1st scene...KGB didnt realize that Matt had a "nut straight" (which means you are dealt a straight with the 1st 3 river cards..7,6,10 Matt was dealt the 8 &9 which is a straight. All KGB thought was either Matt was bluffing or maybe he had a pair (?) Also, Chan was dealt a "nut straight" in the scene they were watching on the TV

@cloudstrife1288 I wondered that too.... he was partners with KGB and they LOST 50k...Matt pulled up with 10 and left with 50 Grama gets whats owed, but Matt was paying them with what he WON from the 2 of them....

@cloudstrife1288 Because Grama and KGB are partners...Matt pays them back with the money he won from them.. Matt pulled up with 10K and won 50k....he ended up leaving for Vegas after paying KGB, the chesterfield and the professor with 30k

@maheradi KGB thought mike was going for a straight so maybe mike had 8 or and 9, so an ace would not help him make a straight... remember after the flop KGB bet 2K after mike checked, and mike called, KGB said "you are on a draw, mike?", meaning mike was hoping to draw a straight with the turn or river

They should do Rounders 2 where an older Matt Damon is a washed out poker bum/alcoholic who meets a nice, innocent girl who saves him from his demons, only to have Teddy KGB come back and take him all the way down. In the final scene, he'll be on skid row having flashbacks and reach into his pocket and all he has is an old, stale Oreo Teddy gave him.
